We are pleased to welcome another new Patina artist, Shan Isherwood
We asked Shan a couple of questions to get to know her better.
What do you make?
Props, lantern , willow weaving sculptures. Knitting, Poly carving, costumes. Small hand held props. I will have a go at making anything!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your work
Since graduating I have worked in many different creative fields. This includes prop making and working with the community to assist in making large and small items for parades and events such as the Brighton Children's parade, Burning the Clocks, the Queens Diamond, White Nights to name a few. I am always keen to broaden my skill set and discover new techniques and materials. I have also spent many years teaching children arts and creativity.
What's your favourite colour?
Blue
What's the best thing you've ever made?
This is a difficult question! So can I say my favourite....which is a life size miniature donkey lantern.
Favourite Patina theme?
Can I say this years???
What's your favourite song?
Too many!
How did you become an artist?
I cannot remember a time when I wasn't making or creating stuff! For example sewing up a small "fairy" habitat scenes and photographing them. Using a sewing machine at a very young age to make Sindy doll clothes.
What do you think of when you think of Lewes?
I always think Lewes is quite rebellious! This is very appealing to me.
Where is your favourite place in Lewes?
I would like to have more opportunity to explore Lewes.
Describe yourself in three words
Patient, kind and creative.
What's your favourite medium to work with?
I don't mind which medium really. It's usually dictated by the make. It's a means to an end.
Did you always want to be an artist?
Yes totally. I'm rubbish at anything else!
What gives you most joy?
A new creative project.
Who is your favourite artist?
Too many, but I do have a massive soft spot for women surrealist artists such as Meret Oppenheim, Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning. Also Lee Miller and the Bloomsbury gang.
What's your favourite piece of art?
Again too many but Meret Oppenheim's "Furry Tea Cup and Saucer" I think is loaded with meaning...
When did you start working with Patina?
This will be my first year!
